The impact of virtual and augmented reality on marketing is undeniable, as they can potentially transform how we experience the world around us. The possibilities are endless, from entertainment to education, healthcare, and marketing. Recently, there has been much buzz around Metaverse and Virtual Reality. Although these technologies show huge potential (we have already seen some interesting trends, such as virtual influencers, which I recently wrote about), they are still in their early stages.
Unlike virtual reality, which creates a completely immersive, simulated environment, augmented reality blends digital information with the real world, creating new opportunities for marketers to engage their customers with informative and entertaining experiences.
Augmented reality has been here for a while. Snapchat was the pioneer of AR filters in the social media space. They introduced their Lenses feature in 2015, gaining immense popularity overnight. The success of Snapchat’s AR filters led other social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, to introduce similar features to their platforms.
Then PokemonGo came in 2016, and I am sure we can all remember millions of people worldwide chasing virtual Pokemon. Pokemon Go further popularized AR and inspired many AR marketing campaigns between 2017 and 2019.
